Patient Privacy and Confidentiality

At our practice, patient confidentiality is of the utmost importance. We are committed to protecting the privacy of your personal and health information, in line with all applicable Federal and State privacy regulations, including the Privacy Act 1998, the Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000, and the Victorian Health Records Act 2001. We also adhere to the standards set out in the RACGP Handbook for the Management of Health Information in Private Medical Practice (5th Edition).

All patient information collected by our practice is confidential and must be treated with the highest level of privacy. This includes all clinical documentation, referral letters, accounts, and other sensitive health-related information. Under no circumstances are our employees permitted to disclose or discuss patient information with unauthorized individuals, whether at the practice, in the home, or in social settings. Any breach of confidentiality may result in disciplinary action, including potential dismissal.

Security of Medical Records

Your medical records are stored securely in our Medical Director software system, which is fully encrypted. Any paper-based documents are scanned and securely stored within the system. Access to your medical information is strictly controlled, with each employee assigned an individual username and password that limits access according to their role. Doctors have full access to patient records, nurses have restricted access, and administrative staff have minimal access.

To further ensure security, our computers are protected by screen passwords and automatic screen locks after 60 seconds of inactivity. Additionally, patient information is never left visible at the front desk to prevent unauthorized viewing.

Staff Training and Commitment

All of our staff are fully trained in maintaining patient privacy, and each employee has signed a privacy statement as part of their employment agreement. This agreement remains binding even after the conclusion of their employment. Our commitment to confidentiality is reinforced through regular training, and we ensure all employees understand their role in safeguarding patient information.

If you have any concerns about your privacy or would like more information on our privacy practices, please do not hesitate to speak with our staff or your GP. We are always available to address your questions and ensure your privacy is respected.
